Overview
The Master’s degree programme in European and American languages and literatures focuses on the study of one or two foreign languages and civilizations. Besides training for the professional, cultural and every-day usage of the two languages, both spoken and written, the degree programme aims to build a thorough knowledge of the respective literary traditions and their historical and sociocultural backgrounds. A special focus will be given on an intercultural dialogue between the two languages that leads to mutual respect and ‘mediation’. Translation theory and practice (specialized, literary, etc.) and the teaching of foreign languages will also be addressed during the degree programme. Graduates in European and American languages and literatures will therefore acquire high skills in theory and practice of the selected languages and will be able to master the analysis and description techniques of literary texts, consider them in an adequate historical-critical perspective and interpret them autonomously. Graduates are also proficient both in oral and written communication to critically convey complex cultural concepts in the two selected languages.
