Overview

The Product Innovation Engineer is an industrial engineer capable of studying, modeling, designing and implementing new products, processes and industrial plants using conventional and innovative materials, the most updated mechanical design techniques (static, fatigue and dynamic design techniques, today almost necessarily with computer assistance), in a competitiveness and industrial sustainability scenario, taking into account, in particular, the need to keep costs to a minimum throughout the whole product lifecycle through a careful product engineering and concurrent design of the production system. It is therefore an engineer with expertise focused on three key drivers of new product success: innovation in materials, in design techniques and in processes and production plants.
The degree course provides the fundamental knowledge in the basic disciplines of mathematics, physics and computer science and in the industrial engineering field with particular reference to the science of metallic and non-metallic materials, to the structural, conceptual and dynamic design of mechanical systems and machines, to manufacturing and plant technologies, to production processes and systems, as well as to energy systems, to electrical and fluid machines.

Career opportunities

The professional formed after the three years of the degree program is capable of performing extremely interesting functions for the labor market, such as that of the designer (structural and conceptual) of products made with traditional and innovative materials, the designer of production processes, production systems and mechanical plants. He can also be involved in the planning and supervision of production and manufacturing processes, in the installation and operation of machines and advanced mechanical plants. All these activities can be done either as an employee or a freelance, and are of great interest for local industrial companies in particular in the fields of precision mechanics, steel and metallurgy, plastics, mechanical plants, biomedical devices, as well as in the traditionally important fields of thermal engineering, food, gold jewelry, textiles, leather and industrial packaging.
